Don’t Just Sit There

Research shows that no matter how fit you are, no matter how much you exercise after work, if you sit at a desk all day you risk serious disease and early death. Yikes! It’s time to get moving.

Welcome to Office Fitness

Larry Swanson, office fitness author and speakerI’m your host, Larry Swanson. I got into the office fitness business after years of practicing massage in downtown Seattle, working on hundreds of office workers. I kept seeing over and over again among my clients the same patterns of pain, postural distortion, and ergonomic challenge. As I researched how I could better help my clients, I encountered the growing body of research on how deadly it is to sit all day, which scared me into action.

Fortunately, I am also discovering a growing body of scientific research that can help you cope with the problems of office work. My goal is to share with you pragmatic, actionable, research-backed information on how to stay fit and healthy at your desk job.

Specifically, here’s what I’m up to:

  • Writing a book, Office Fitness: Tame Your Pain and Lengthen Your Life with Better Workday Health Habits.
  • Delivering engaging and informative office fitness talks.
  • Blogging here as much as I can.
  • Listing on this website office fitness products that can help you in your quest to stay fit and healthy in the office.

Don Draper Mad Men smoking in barDo you ever watch Mad Men? The characters in that show are constantly smoking like chimneys and drinking like fish. You just don’t see that kind of broad-based self-destruction anymore. Nowadays we destroy ourselves with sedentary behaviors, awkward work set-ups, and crappy food. I fervently hope that in 20 years we’ll look back on all of our current bad habits with the same incredulity that we look at the smoking and drinking on Mad Men.

You need to stay fit for work and fit at work. My intention is to help you with those goals by applying basic fitness principles to your unique needs working in an office.
